DEI Statement

"Diversity is the mix.  Inclusion is making the mix work."

                          -- Andres Tapias

My commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion manifests from my academic and professional backgrounds in three primary ways. First, my professional legal background provides me with a philosophical foundation and a moral North Star in the form of the founding documents of the United States. Second, my academic background in historical scholarship provides me with the understanding that, despite the lofty tones and mandates in the founding documents, we, as a society and individually, have fallen well short of those sentiments in terms of how marginalized groups have been treated, oppressed, and excluded. Finally, my studies of information science and my work as a developing information professional have shown that while we ideally strive to be neutral gatekeepers/guardians of information for our patrons as mandated by the ALA’s Library Bill of Rights, pure neutrality favors the powerful while neglecting weaker, oppressed, or excluded groups. We must strive to include all groups, provide fair access to everyone, and ensure everyone has a voice that is heard. It is through these experiences and studies that I have become aware of how gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, and socioeconomic status (and other marginalized categories) influence opportunities and outcomes and how this hinders the potential and prospects of all our patrons and citizens.

"Equality is treating everyone the same. But equity is taking differences into account, so everyone has a chance to succeed."

-- Jodi Picoult,                              Small Great Things
